- The draft sequence of the human genome, within the framework of the international public consortium of the “Human Genome Project” consortium, is made available simultaneously with the one developed by the privately-held American company, Celera Genomics. Within the consortium, the Centre National de Séquençage (CNS) was in charge of sequencing Chromosome 14.
- Opening of the Génocentre, an international conference center, in Evry.
Creation of Génoplante Valor, a company established for developing industrial uses for the research coming out of Génoplante.
- Laurent Fabius, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry, and Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg, Minister of Research announced measures to help new biotech companies and also the creation of the Genopole® and “Consortium National de la Recherche en Génomique”.
