The University of Evry-Val-d’Essonne

Université d'Evry-Val d'EssonneIn close collaboration with the University of Evry-Val-d’Essonne, Genopole® has helped establish a comprehensive set of teaching courses in biology, genomics, bioinformatics and biomathematics.

The University of Evry-Val d’Essonne: major changes

The University of Evry-Val d’Essonne (UEVE) was founded in July 1991, along with three other new universities in the Paris Ile-de-France region. The initial focus was on science, technology and vocational & technical courses. At present, the UEVE has 10,300 students and more than half of its 160 courses are vocational in nature.

When the Evry Genopole® was established close by in 1998, the UEVE was naturally prompted to focus part of its life science research on genomics and related subjects, such as bioinformatics, biomaterials and modeling & mathematics applied to biology. These topics are integral parts of the development of novel approaches (systems biology, synthetic biology and epigenomics) at Genopole®.

Moreover, eleven national research institute units are associated with the UEVE’s Department of Biology, including two INSERM units and a number of joint CNRS/INSERM/INRA/UEVE units (one of which receives funding from the CEA). In the mid-term, all these units will be grouped together within the UEVE’s Institute of Biology.

Lastly, the “From the Genome to the Organism” Doctoral Program (operated jointly by the UEVE and the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin (UVSQ)) provides postgraduate courses and research training in four areas: genome analysis, the molecular and cell biology of the main physiological functions, host-infectious agent interactions and the structural analysis of biomolecules. On the Evry campus, the priorities are genomics in general and high-throughput genomics (with three major items of life science infrastructure: Genoscope, the French National Genotyping Center and the CEA Transcriptomics Platform), complex living stems and gene & cell therapy (AFM, INSERM) in particular.

These activities are developed in close collaboration with Genopole®.

Science Accueil: providing services to non-French researchers on the Evry campus.

In order to provide greater support for foreign students and foreign researchers in Evry, the University of Evry-Val d’Essonne recently asked the Science Accueil association to set up a welcome desk for its postgrad students and guest researchers. This service is available to all the founding members of the Evry-Val d’Essonne Science Cluster and can also be extended to researchers from other higher educational institutions in the Evry Val de Seine area: Genopole®, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Informatique pour l’Industrie et l’Entreprise IT college, the Evry Materials Center at the Ecole Nationale des Mines de Paris, the Telecom & Management SudParis business school and the future Clinical and Translational Research Center. The Science Accueil office provides:
- administrative assistance for relocation-related issues (visas, work & residency permits, social security coverage, healthcare, opening a bank account, insurance, finding schools & nurseries and other practical aspects of daily life.)
- help with finding accommodation, with a growing database of furnished rental accommodation in and around Evry.
- French language courses.
- cultural outings.

As part of this collaboration, the University of Evry-Val d’Essonne has become an associate member of Science Accueil.
