With the support of the French State, national research organizations (CEA, CNRS, Inra, Inserm) and the University of Évry-Val-d’Essonne, Genopole has become a major research and education hub for life sciences.

Genopole’s renown is built upon health biotech research. However, the biocluster is also engaged in other equally promising and future-looking research fields such as agricultural, environmental and industrial biotech.

The principal research orientations of Genopole laboratories

- Genomics and post-genomics
The study of genes and their functions, regulation and expression ; the identification of genes involved in diseases, etc. Knowledge from these fields is used to develop new therapeutic approaches, create more environmentally-friendly production processes, and conceive innovative techniques.

- Biotherapies :
Innovative biotherapies—stem cell therapy, gene therapy—are currently a major subject for research, bringing hope to the treatment of degenerative diseases, the reparation of damaged tissues and the resolution of currently incurable genetic disorders.

- Systems biology and synthetic biology :

Focusing on the minute exploration of biological mechanisms and the conception and construction of biological systems with novel functions, these emerging fields promise new understanding of life processes and groundbreaking applications in health, energy, materials, and more.

- Bioinformatics and biomathematics : 

The acceleration of such fields as large-scale genomics and synthetic biology bring extreme complexity to biological sciences and thus necessitate the storage and analysis of enormous amounts of data. Indeed biotech cannot thrive without powerful mathematical modeling and bio-computational expertise.

- Biophysics, biochemistry, nanotechnologies
Physics, chemistry and biology converge in the analysis of biomolecules, the synthesis of biomaterials, the study of proteomes and the development of nanoparticles as potential cellular markers.

- Medicine, telemedicine, clinical research
Research applied to medicine requires a close working relationship with clinicians to permit clinical research and its role for the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of novel drugs, technologies or devices developed in the laboratory.
Concerning innovative devices, smartphone applications are being developed to permit remote management of patients (“telemedicine”), particularly those with chronic diseases such as diabetes.
